The process was originally invented jointly by Swedish chemical company Perstorp and Reichhold Chemicals . Industrially, formaldehyde is produced by catalytic oxidation of methanol. Aspen HYSYS simulation software was used for the process simulation of a Formox formaldehyde plant, one of the factories located at the industrial park in Perstorp, Sweden. The Formaldehyde-Methanol-Water system is highly non-ideal, which made it difficult to find a suitable thermodynamic model.
The Formox process manufactures formaldehyde. Formox is a universal registered trademark owned by Perstorp Specialty Chemicals AB, Sweden. Industrially, formaldehyde is manufactured by catalytic oxidation of methanol. The most usually used catalysts are silver metal or a mixture of an iron oxide with molybdenum and/or vanadium.
