Danach verläuft er in der Lateralwand des Sinus cavernosus und zieht durch die Fissura orbitalis superior in die Augenhöhle.

Der Nervus oculomotorius (Augenbewegungsnerv) ist der dritte von insgesamt zwölf paarigen Hirnnerven.Er kontrolliert die Mehrzahl der Augenbewegungen (zusammen mit dem Nervus trochlearis und Nervus abducens) sowie die Pupillenverengung (Muskulus sphincter pupillae) und das Heben des oberen Augenlids (Lidhebermuskel, M. levator palpebrae superioris). The oculomotor nerve is the third cranial nerve. It enters the orbit via the superior orbital fissure and innervates extrinsic eye muscles that enable most movements of the eye and that raise the eyelid. The nerve also contains fibers that innervate the intrinsic eye muscles that enable pupillary constriction and accommodation. The oculomotor nerve is derived from the basal plate of the embryonic midbrain. Cranial nerves IV and VI also participate in control of eye movement.
